On every vacation it has become a tradition for my family and me to spend a day reliving the past. My mom and dad are both infatuated with history, modeling our own home after an 1800's colonial style farm house, so naturally my younger sister and I have grown up with an appreciation for all things antique. During our most recent visit to South Carolina with family friends, we made a point to stop at The Biltmore Estate, the largest privately owned home in the United States. Let me be the first to tell you, it was incredible.
If you have never been to The Biltmore, I would definitely recommend taking a trip to see it. When walking around the grounds, you are immediately drawn to the massive architecture that follows you throughout. I felt like a doll in her larger-than-life dollhouse everywhere I went! The structures are absolutely immaculate; my dad was even quick to point out the minute details like these quirky faces that could be found among a number of walls in and around the home!
Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take any photos inside the mansion, but once we went out onto the first balcony I couldn't help but sneak a few! Technically we weren't inside the home, so this is perfectly legal, right?
This view was my absolute favorite part of the tour. Living in the midwest you see a lot of hills, but never will you get 125,000 acres of mountains to stare off into. Seriously though, does this not look like a scene from Downton Abby? I can definitely see Edith Crawley wallowing in self pity out on this balcony.
And here it is: the one and only accidental indoor shot that turned out pretty darn cool.
We were lead down into the basement to view the servants quarters and walked for what seemed like miles down these low-lighted, stone-paved hallways. I had my camera in my hands when suddenly I accidentally snapped a shot. My aperture and shutter speed were still set for the outdoor light, so I figured this photo would just be an overexposed blur. But in all actuality, it turned out to be one of my favorites.
And then there was the second balcony that had the best views of the mountains. For those of you who don't know or haven't already gathered, I adore mountains and this was my first trip seeing them up close and not just passing by at a distance in the car. I didn't realize that for a good 2 hours of the car ride we would be driving straight through the Appalachian mountains! I freaked and took a lot of pixilated photos on my iPhone. It was a great time.
To see more of my trip at the Biltmore Estate, check out part 2 that will be coming soon!
